As long as the reference is otherwise valid XML syntax, Saxon won't
care, but neither will it do any validation WRT that schema.

If you have an RNG validator, you can interpose it into the processing
sequence, either through a calling script or as a SAX filter (if it's a
SAX-based process). I'm sure there are other more sophisticated ways to
integrate it as well--I've not stayed that current on my XML processing
APIs and frameworks.
