It may be either the encoding or the fact that ASCII encoding means
non-ASCII characters are encoded as numeric entities, but it seems
like XEP silently doesn't render glyphs for characters like U+211D
(double struck R) if the encoding is UTF-8. (Yes, I properly installed
the necessary font, which is why it works when I use US-ASCII
encoding.)
