Hello Dan,
In XSL-FO default line-height is calculated as font-size*1.2, but you
can set it explicitly using appropriate property 'line-height'. The
problem you describe may be also caused by some properties that
modifies baseline of the text. Yet again I would like to ask you for
code sample in order to analyze your problem.
As for the second question: you can control vertical spacing using
'line-height' property mentioned above. If you want to make text looks
compressed in horizontal direction you have to use font-stretch
property, e.g.: font-stretch="condensed".
