first a warning: your example is not conformant, Nikolai will provide
detailed explanation.

Then a note: I've changed somethign in column-balancing code that affected
just that behaviour. It is easy to reintroduce the same behaviour; I'll
do that and we'll release 3.14 tomorrow.
