I had a similar problem and I was told to set hyphenation. It worked
fine for my purposes but not sure if it would work for you. I believe
that you can control
hyphenation character by character, and also settting the hyphenation
character (which might be null?). Have a look at here:

http://www.w3.org/TR/xsl/#hyphenate

And then let us know if that worked!
