    Hi,

XEP 3.6.3 (and several versions before that) gets extremely slow converting from XEP's area tree (AT) to PDF if we activate the image embedding feature.

Using 2 versions of the same FO file containing about 16 images, with the only difference being the processing instruction <?xep-out-embed-images true?>, I get the following timings (AT to PDF):
    - without this PI: 12 seconds
    - with this PI: 3 minutes 43 seconds

FO to AT timings are only slightly slower: about 6.5 seconds with the PI against about 6.1 seconds without it.

This is repeatable and does not seem to be tied with the image format: it happens when embedding PNG, SVG and PDF.

Is there any chance that this performance hit is reduced/removed in a future XEP version?

    Thanks,
    Benoit
